Set Sail for a Cause

Presented by the Oregon Women's Sailing Association (OWSA)

Local Recognition for OWSA and Sail for the Cure®

Recent awards showcase the Oregon Women’s Sailing Association and our collective ability to use our passion for sailing to improve the local community.

The Portland Chapter of Project Management recently named the 11th Annual Sail for the Cure®: Making Breast Cancer Walk the Plank, winner of the 2010 Project of the Year for its use of project methodologies to control budget, scope and schedule. The award confirms OWSA’s commitment to producing their annual charitable event as efficiently as possible, making the best use of volunteer time and generous sponsorships to improve the local community.

As the 2010 recipient of Strength of Many Award given by the Oregon and SW Washington affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, OWSA thanks the many individuals, businesses, and groups who have joined with them the last 12 years. The Strength of Many Award recognizes a group’s dedication, commitment, creativity, initiative and dependability in working together to wipe out Breast Cancer. OWSA members and SFC volunteers have consistently demonstrated these qualities as they bring the community together each September. Many of SFC’s volunteers and participants have never missed a year of the family-friendly Columbia River sail and party at the Portland Yacht Club.

In 2000, Oregon Women’s Sailing Association (OWSA) volunteers created the first Sail for the Cure®, a simple sail and picnic. By 2009, the event had grown into the largest sailing event on the Columbia River. Together with the entire sailing and boating community, SFC has donated more than $270,000 to the local affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® – rated as a top charity for the last 4 years by Charity Navigator.

Keep the “Strength of Many” going strong!

On Thursday, January 27, 2011, a small group of women celebrated the accomplishments of the local affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The evening was made more wonderful when Oregon Women’s Sailing Association (OWSA) received the Strength of Many award—in honor of every donor, volunteer, and participant who has given an hour or a dollar.

Special recognition goes to a core group who have given significant time to every SFTC to date: Alice Patten, who created Sail for the Cure; Edie Felix, who developed and maintains the database that make OWSA and SFTC work; Erika Spooner, who has created everything graphical from brochures to t-shirts; Linda Wanitschek, master of sailing games; and Mary Woiccak who added a silent auction to the event. Many of these women have also chaired the event, or played special roles in each year.

This year’s SFTC Chair, Annette Kienberger, hopes you will join these women and the many others who give year after year, and volunteer your time and talents to the 12th Annual Sail for the Cure on September 25, 2011.

Sponsor a survivor to Sail for the Cure

Sailing long distance or in challenging conditions and surviving a major life crisis like breast cancer share much in common. Both require study, patience, team work and a bit of luck. Emotions may even run a parallel course as anxiety, uncertainty, hope, and even joy swirl together as situations change. The comparisons abound. This is something our Sail for the Cure Ambassadors know well. Each has had to navigate through breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and the eventual return to good health.

While our Ambassadors have all shared the same “seas,” each woman’s voyages is unique. Their stories serve as powerful reminders of what’s at stake in our fight against this killer. That’s one reason our Ambassadors have stepped forward. They want to share what what they learned on their journeys, and help us raise funds so that others can receive the Breast Cancer education, prevention, treatment, support and research provided by the Oregon and SW Washington affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.

Our Ambassadors are raising pledges to earn tickets to “Sail for the Cure.” That’s where you come in! Read our Sail for the Cure Ambassadors’ stories, and chose one, or chose all, and make your donation in her name by clicking on her corresponding button or mailing in a check.

Your money will be donated to the local Susan G. Komen for the Cure affiliate, and will help the Ambassador you’ve selected earn tickets to Sail for the Cure. When an Ambassador’s pledged donations reaches $250, she receives a VIP ticket to Sail for the Cure. When she raises $350, she receives 2 tickets, and it takes $500 to earn 4 tickets. Every dollar helps!

A special thank you to Alice, Edie, and “Janet” for sharing their stories.
